
Hiking Guide to Boonoo Boonoo National Park, NSW
Boonoo Boonoo National Park is a hidden oasis in New South Wales, 27 km north of Tenterfield. Boonoo Boonoo features tranquil rivers, secluded waterholes, and one of the region’s most breathtaking waterfalls. This park is ideal for a mix of exploration and relaxation.
Getting There
From Tenterfield head north on the Mount Lindesay Highway, then turn onto Boonoo Boonoo Falls Road. Follow this unsealed road for 4 km to the park entrance and another 12 km to reach the falls.
Visitor Fee
$8 per vehicle per day. The park uses a self-registration fee collection system. Please bring the correct change and fill in the envelope when you arrive in the park.
Hiking in Boonoo Boonoo National Park
Boonoo Boonoo Falls Walking Track
- Distance: 0.7 km return
- Time: 20 – 30 minutes
- Difficulty: Easy
The Boonoo Boonoo Falls walking track is a short and easy walk. It starts from Boonoo Boonoo picnic area. At the end of this track is the viewing platform that overlooks the fabulous Boonoo Boonoo Falls. You get a magnificent view of the falls cascading over a 210m cliff into a gorge.
Legend has it, this is where Banjo Patterson proposed to his sweetheart, Alice Walker.

Boonoo Boonoo River Walk

- Time: 3 – 4 hours

This walk connects Cypress Pine Campground to the Boonoo Boonoo Falls picnic area, following fire trails and offering river views and several spots for a refreshing swim. Spring is particularly stunning, with wildflowers like wattles and rock orchids lining the path.

Staying at the park
Cypress Pine Campground is located along the Boonoo Boonoo River. This campground allows visitors to immerse themselves in the sounds of nature and the beauty of the riverbanks. There are picnic tables, BBQ areas, toilets, and drinking water. Sites are limited and pre-booking is recommended, especially in peak seasons.

Spring and autumn are ideal times to experience Boonoo Boonoo National Park. Spring offers vibrant wildflowers, while autumn provides mild weather for hiking. Summer can be warm, so bring sun protection and plenty of water.
