Trip Notes

I first walked the Pinnacle trail as a child with my parents, and it left a lasting impression on me. Since then, I have returned to this stunning hike multiple times. Many times, I shared the experience with my own kids.

We began the walk in the wonderland car park and followed the signs to the pinnacles. You start by walking up a bushy, rocky path. Then, you take the stairs heading into a section called the Grand Canyon. It is not as grand as the American version, but still a pretty awesome part of the hike.

Climbing through the Grand Canyon

As we climbed through the Grand Canyon, we alternated between rock hopping and walking up shady slopes. Some of the rocks are on a bit of a precarious angle. There are handrails on the hard parts to help you along. The deep grey walls of the canyon create a stunning backdrop. If you time it right, you can be lucky and spot people abseiling the rocks here. Today was no exception. We stopped and took a nice break. We watched them scale up and down for a while.

After a couple of staircases, we found ourselves out in the open again. We walked on rocks that were fairly level. Then, we hit some sections of metal boardwalk that connected rocks that were too far apart. With every new turn, you feel like you are in a completely different area of bush. This variety makes it so rewarding.

The Stairs go up and up and up!

The stairs are not too relentless, but they are tough and there are a lot of steps to climb. Even though I am quite fit, this section always gets my heart pumping. I can imagine it would be quite tough for those who aren’t as fit. Thankfully, there are flat sections with some seats in between. A nice shady canyon overhangs, providing a great rest place. On this hike we were lucky to see wildlife; an echidna and four emus. It is always so nice to spot wildlife in the bush.

Heading into Silent Street

Once we completed the stairs, we reached rocks again and walked uphill on uneven surfaces before arriving at Silent Street. This is definitely one of my favorite sections of the hike. Silent Street is a long, narrow slot canyon with high walls. A series of rocks act as steppingstones. They allow you to walk through the middle of it. At The end of Silent Street, we climbed up a steep narrow staircase.

The Pinnacle Lookout

After some rock hopping out from silent street we climbed further up the ridge. Right at the top, the views are amazing. You can look out at the vast mountain range. You can also see the sparkling blue reservoir.

As normal we spend quite a long time here. There area is quite large, and you can spend time exploring the area. Take a look around and find a nice place to sit. It is a great time to eat some food while enjoying the spectacular views. Be aware though that there are unfenced cliff edges, so take care and watch young children.

The hike is an out and back hike. Once you have finished the hike you take the same track back down again.

What to Pack.

Having the right gear can make a huge difference. Here’s what I pack and have relied upon for years:

  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Rain jacket
  • Insect spray
  • Day pack with hydration
  • Hiking boots
  • Trekking poles
  • Snacks or light picnic
  • Basic first aid kit

Other Starting Points for this Hike

The Pinnacle Walk starts at Sundial Car Park.
This choice is almost the same length as walking from the Wonderland car park. The trail from Sundial is easier but it misses the best bits of the trail. These include the sections of the Grand Canyon and Silent Street. It is the recommended route for those walking with young children though.

The Pinnacle Walk from Halls Gap
For those looking for a longer hike, you can also start from Halls Gap. This route is more challenging due to the increased distance and elevation. The walk from Halls Gap to the Pinnacle is approximately 10 km one way. It takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace. This route offers a more immersive experience in the natural beauty of the Grampians. It requires a higher fitness level and more preparation.

Final Notes

The Pinnacle Walk in the Grampians is a delightful adventure. It offers a mix of stunning landscapes and unique geological features. A sense of wildness captivates hikers of all ages. The Pinnacle Walk is sure to create lasting memories.
