Istanbul Day Trip Guide: Ferry to Kadiköy and Scenic Hike
Istanbul has a way of weaving magic into every corner, and today was no exception. The sun was rising over the city. I felt excited to explore the Bosphorus. I wanted to discover the vibrant neighborhoods of Kadıköy and Moda. My plan? I decided to take the ferry from Karaköy to Kadıköy. Then, I planned to enjoy a scenic hike to the charming neighborhood of Moda. I wanted to make a stop at the renowned Black House Café before heading to the picturesque Moda Pier.
Morning in Karaköy
I began my day in Karaköy, a lively district known for its mix of historical and modern vibes. The streets were buzzing with energy. I strolled past the Galata Tower. This magnificent medieval stone tower offers panoramic views of the city. My first stop was a cozy café. There, I indulged in a delicious Turkish breakfast. It was full of fresh bread, olives, cheese, and a steaming cup of çay (Turkish tea). I can’t tell you how much I loved these breakfasts.
After breakfast, I made my way to the ferry terminal. I was excited to hop on a boat that would take me across the Bosphorus to Kadıköy.
The Ferry Ride

I settled into a spot on the upper deck. The ferry departed. I was instantly mesmerized by the views. The sparkling waters of the Bosphorus stretched out before me, with the iconic skyline of Istanbul framing the horizon. On one side lay the European side. It boasted impressive mosques and palaces. On the other was the Asian side where Kadıköy awaited.
The ferry ride cost around 15 Turkish Lira (about 0.50 USD), and I paid using my Istanbulkart, an essential transit card that simplifies travel across the city. The Istanbulkart can be used on all public transportation, including buses, trams, and ferries, making it incredibly convenient. You can buy the card at kiosks or vending machines located at major transport hubs. It requires a small starting fee. You also need to top it up for your travels.
As we approached Kadıköy, I felt a rush of excitement. The colorful buildings and bustling markets came into view, and I couldn’t wait to explore. After disembarking, I paused to admire the lively atmosphere of Kadıköy. Local shops and street vendors filled the streets, selling everything from fresh produce to delicious street food.
Exploring Kadıköy
Before setting out on my hike, I decided to grab a quick snack. I picked up a simit. It is a traditional Turkish sesame bagel. I paired it with a refreshing glass of Aryan, which is a yogurt drink.

I took a quick detour left and walked along the shore and passed by the historic Haydarpasa Train Station. Its architecture was stunning, and the clock tower was impressive.
The Hike to Moda
As I made my way to Moda, I felt invigorated by the beauty of the surroundings. The path was alive with locals out for their morning walks, joggers, and families enjoying the sunny weather. Young teenagers were setting up paid games. They invited the local kids to try and shoot at the balloons along the shoreline.
After a pleasant walk, I arrived in Moda, a neighborhood known for its artsy vibe and laid-back atmosphere. This area was filled with charming streets. A visit to the Black House Café was one of my highlights. It is a cozy spot renowned for its inviting ambiance. The café also serves delicious coffee.
Black House Café

As I stepped into Black House Café, I was instantly captivated by its warm and artistic decor. The atmosphere was relaxed, making it the perfect place to unwind. I ordered a cool apple cider and relaxed while soaking in the artistic surroundings. Local artwork decorated the café. I loved observing the creative atmosphere as fellow patrons enjoyed their drinks and pastries.
After savoring my drink, I felt rejuvenated and ready to continue my adventure. I left the café and continued my walk toward Moda Pier, my ultimate destination.
Moda Pier

The stroll to Moda Pier was a treat. As I approached, the sight of the pier offering stunning views of the Bosphorus, and the city was breathtaking. The area was filled with people enjoying the fresh air, some lounging on benches while others took leisurely walks. I found a spot at the edge of the pier. From there, I see boats sailing by. I took in the beautiful scenery. The view of the skyline against the backdrop of the water was nothing short of mesmerizing. Inside the building was a small library where locals read and tapped away on their computers. The perfect spot for me as a working traveler.
Walking Through the Streets of Kadıköy
On my return from the pier, I chose a different route back to the ferry terminal. I decided to walk through the streets of Kadıköy. I wandered through the vibrant neighborhoods, where the streets were filled with charming shops, local markets, and inviting cafes. The atmosphere was lively, with locals chatting, children playing, and street musicians adding to the ambiance.
There was an abundance of cats roaming the streets of Kadıköy. I spotted a group of fluffy felines lounging in the sun. They were sitting in shops, on books, and looking out windows. I could not resist snapping a few photos of them. Each cat had its own personality. Some were playful and chased each other. Others were more laid-back and soaked up the warmth. One of my favorite pictures was this one of a cat sitting back enjoying the sunset next to the water.

Return to Karaköy
I walked back to the Kadıköy ferry terminal. There, I purchased my ticket for the ride back to Karaköy. The fare stayed at 15 Turkish Lira. I tapped my Istanbulkart on the reader as I boarded the ferry. It was late by the time I got back. I sat and watched the locals eat and fish. Then, I headed out for dinner.
